I don’t know about you, but I’ve never seen a single minute
of Avatar: The Last Airbender and I
can’t say I’m going to anytime soon. Fortunately it doesn’t matter, because you
won’t need to understand the intricate world-building of the Bendies (?) when Sage
Hagen of Just Write talks about backstory.
There’s some great advice on developing backstories in this
video – I actually went and adjusted some of my character’s backstories based
on what’s covered here.
This was a great video! Also, you need to watch last Airbender (not the horrid movie)! It's amazing, and really is one of the best shows ever made in almost every way, like the video says.
ReplyDeleteJust Write has put together some fantastic video essays -- I'll have more from them in the future.
ReplyDeleteAs for "The Last Airbender," I have the impression that there are a bunch of spin-off series and features... Where should a complete newbie start?
Avatar: The Last Airbender, Book One - Water. Then book two - Earth, and then book three - fire. That's all three seasons (which is the complete series) of the original show. The first season is setup. The second season really amps things up. The third season gets dark.
DeleteThere is only one other series, which is The Legend of Korra. It's not so much a spin-off as it is a sequel that takes place many decades later. It's definitely not as good as the original series, but it does have one of the best episodes of the entire franchise.
There's only one movie... The horrible M. Night Shyamalan movie, which is based one the first season of the original series.
